Real Bread Week- What Is It About?
Real Bread Week customarily starts on the second last Saturday of February and ends on the last Saturday of February. This week-long celebration of Real Bread Week began in the year 2009, and since then, it is celebrated every year not only by bakers but also by children, youth clubs, bakeries, baking schools, and other communities. The annual international celebration for this year began on February 18 and will continue through February 26.

History of Real Bread Week?
Real bread’s origins can be traced back to 14,000 years ago when people first began baking with buckwheat and barley. Then in 1350 BC, sour bread was first made in Egypt. Unfortunately, today most people consume commercial bread prepared with chemicals, artificial flavours and additives. The Real Bread Campaign aims to refocus public attention on the health advantages of real organic bread, which is free of these addicting artificial flavours.
In 2009, this festival of Real Bread Week began as a part of The Real Bread Campaign by the Sustain Alliance. It is an alliance of organisations and communities striving to improve food and farming. Today many initiatives run under the name of this campaign, such as ‘Together We Rise’, which is an initiative to support people with mental health issues, helping them cope with various baking activities. Real Bread Campaign later collaborated with Balcony Shirts to create exclusive T-shirts, mugs, and aprons to promote Real Bread Week. Every year, Balcony Shirts launch a limited edition for Real Bread Week and donates to the Real Bread Campaign for every item sold.
Why Is Real Bread Week Celebrated?
Real Bread Week is the celebration of the art of making organic additive-free bread, and it also celebrates all those individuals and local bakeries that produce real bread. This festival is celebrated to:
- Remind people of the health benefits of real bread.
- Keeping the tradition of baking real bread alive.
- Spreading awareness in people for making healthier and natural food choices.
- Motivating people to eat natural food instead of processed food with harmful artificial additives.
- Help individuals who bake real bread and local bakeries to grow.
